Donald Duck In Mathmagic Land

We watched this video in class today, and here is what I learned:

  • Golden ratio:

Is the mathematical representation of beauty.
All parts have the same dimensions.
The Greeks were obsessed with it, you can see it in the Parthenon, other buildings and in their sculptures. The rest of the world also adopted this afterwards, example: Notredam, Renaissance painters.

  • Everything in nature has a mathematical sense:

Flowers = pentagons.
Shells = spirals.
Games (chess) (billards) = calculated strategy, geometrical board, mathematical moves.
Fields (baseball) (football) (basketball) = geometrical shape.

  • Here are a couple of nice quotes from the video:

“Everything is made according to mathematical number and shape” – Pythagoras
“Only in the mind we can conceive infinity”.
“Each discovery leads to many others, it is a chain.”
“Mathematics is that alphabet with which God has written the universe”. -Galileo
