- Rationalism: a set of rules, mathematically set, so that the language might work (manipulation of symbols by rules)
 - Empirism: associations between sensory qualities.

Why is
Chomsky so important?
Because Chomsky´s
rules are based on phonology, while other linguists before him base themselves
on the esthetic of the words.
Theories:
- Chomsky and Halle´s Generative Phonology:

Rationalism
- Rumelhart and McClelland´s Connectionism:

Empirism.
- Prince and Pinker´s Words and Rules:

A mixture of generative phonology (for regulars) and connectionism (for irregulars). This theory takes both rationalism and empirism.
